I AM THE MASTER!!!

I AM THE MASTER!!! Hmmmmmmm, 18.03 PSET or blog? On the one hand I could be productive and try to finish my PSET, generally making my life less stressful promoting my own well-being. On the other hand, I could also make the argument that blogging is therapeutic and thus would lead to a similar outcome of well-being. Now the question is, which do I enjoy more, blogging or 18.03? Um, blogging. Duh. Well begin with a quick video clip: [A short segment from CBSs Big Bang Theory] Id like to use this video as conclusive proof that every geek in the world wants to be the master (Id include the proof by induction but its long, tedious, and involves calculus so Ive omitted it). Master of what? Doesnt matter, as long as said geek has control over something. I think this stems from any geeks long life of ridicule and belittlement, but I could be wrong. Anywho, the powers at be have begun to realize that nothing swells the ego of an MIT student more than proclaiming him/her as the master of something. I am totally in favor of a professor calling me Master Snively. What an excellent PSET Master Snively or Correct Master Snively, very well done. Unfortunately, there is only one way to become a master at MIT and its in only one subject. Every freshman taking 8.01, 8.01L, or 8.02 will, by years end, be Masters of Physics!!! The excitement is almost overwhelming! I mean, me, a Master of Physics, can you imagine!? People will bow before me and kiss the ground I walk on. I will proudly proclaim the virtues of precession and calculate capacitance for fun, squashing the less adept between the force of my heel and the normal force from the ground. I AM A MASTER OF PHYSICS!!! Oop, Im sorry, let me get you a rag, I didnt mean to drip that much sarcasm all over your shoes. *squeak squeak squeak* There, all clean now, except for that little bit of bitterness that soaked into the laces but thatll wear off in time. MasteringPhysics.com is an online physics program that tacks more homework onto the lives of most freshman physics students. In addition to weekly labs and weekly PSETS we also have Mastering Physics due twice a week (Thursdays at 11:00 PM, Sundays at 8:30 PM). Essentially you log on and are met with a screen listing sets of assignments. Click on the one thats due next and you are met with this: [Ive actually finished this set so there are percentages next the different assignments.] Click an assignment and you are greeted by a screen like this: Click It is then up for you, the student, to answer the physics questions. Not so bad you say? Sure, Ill go for that, for maybe the first two weeks of it, but certain things about Mastering Physics start to DRIVE YOU FREAKING INSANE throughout the semester. Ive taken the liberty of listing such attributes: 1) Its extra work. 2) Its extra work thats really easy to forget because its due at strange times. 3) There are always a lot of assignments in each set. 4) Each of those assignments have a lot of parts (sometimes a through m) 5) Everything is case sensitive 6) You cant submit it with parts that are left blank 7) No Copy-Paste 8) They will use degrees in the question and expect radians in the answer (and vice versa) 9) Guess wrong even once on a multiple choice question and your grade is screwed 10) If you turn in Mastering Physics even 1 second past the deadline you get absolutely no credit for it. If youll remember, Chris posted a lovely little tale about Mastering Physics that exemplifies many of these attributes (Hopefully Chris doesnt mind if I reproduce his story here): Aside from the technologically-enhanced lectures, another complement to TEAL is that students must submit weekly assignments online through a site called Mastering Physics. The online assignments involve answering physics problems and entering numerical or variable answers through a real-time system that immediately assesses the answer and provides hints if the student does not know how to approach the problem or enters the wrong answer. Since everything is done online, homework can now be due late at night, or on weekends. For 8.01, there are 2 assignments weekly that must be submitted before 11:00 PM on Thursday and 8:30 PM on Sunday. One of the biggest drawbacks to this system is that everything is computerized, and if you miss the deadline by even ONE SECOND, you get a zero for all the problems that you didnt submit before the deadline. So Zach and Chris suddenly remembered that they had a Mastering Physics assignment due at 8:10, and this was basically the ruckus that ensued: Disclaimer: This does NOT happen on a daily basis. =p 8:10 Zach: Do we have a Mastering Physics assignment due today? Chris: Crap, youre right!! *logs on and attempts the questions* *everything is fine, until 3 minutes before the deadline* 8:27 Chris: Three more minutes! What do you still have? Zach: The reading question and the one on escape velocity. Chris: Me too! Dude, did you read the chapter? Zach: I dont remember any of it! Chris: Me neither! Dude, wheres my book?! *retrieves the Physics book from some corner in the room* Chris: Uhh, the chapter is about Keplers Laws of Gravitation. Zach: Oh! Thats easy! *scribbles something into the reading question* Chris: *writes* I found this chapter to be pretty confusing because Keplers third law is confusing .. 8:28:30 Chris: One and a half minutes! Zach: Lets see the escape velocity questionoh crap! It has like seven parts! Chris: *clicks in* AHHH. Zach: *reads* The key to making a concise mathematicalblah blahfind the mechanical energy of a object blah blah blahassume gravitational potential energy is zero at large distances. I dont know what this is! What are you doing? Chris: Im doing the multiple choice! Yes, yes, no, yes, no.YESS Im getting all of these right without reading the questions! Its crazy! Zach: ARGG ok Ill go and do those as well! 8:29:30 Chris: AHHH THIRTY SECONDS. What is the formula for escape velocity?! Zach: AHHH its something to do with the square root of something!! Chris: AHHH FIFTEEN SECONDS! Stop doing what youre doing! Press submit!! Press submit!! Theyll give credit for the questions that we at least answered!! *frantically presses Submit Item* Zach: Im pressing it!! Im pressing it!! AHHH Cannot submit homework when there are incomplete parts!! *bursts out laughing* Chris: AHHH OK I FOUND THE ESCAPE VELOCITY ITS THE SQUARE ROOT OF 8:30:00 Together: AHHH IT EXPIRED!! Zach: Okay, Ill just take the time to do this homework assignment over properly. 8:31:39 Chriss screen: Homework submitted 1 Minute and 39 Seconds late and received 0% of available credit. Chris: So all that work and I still got 0% for the Escape Velocity part. Zach: Oh well, at least it was fun. Lets see, how many things from my list happened there? 1,2,4,6, and 10. I too have a Mastering Physics story, which is similar but different. It was about 8:27 PM and I was walking towards my floor lounge when all of a sudden (name changed to protect the guilty party) Andrew sprinted out of the floor lounge screaming OH MY GOD! THREE MINUTES TO DO MASTERING PHYSICS! He blew past me towards his room to get his computer. Two seconds later his friend, Eric, rounds the corner from a hallway orthogonal to the one Im in and sprints after Andrew, yelling IVE GOT THE ANSWERS ANDREW, IM COMING!!! Im laughing now, realizing that this is too funny an opportunity not bear witness too. I jog after Eric as Andrew runs out of his room, across the hall, and slams down into a couch next to Eric. I stand in the doorway and watch. Andrew: Come on computer, turn on!!! Eric: Alright dude, Ive got all the answers up, just get online and we get this done. Andrew: Im trying! *looks at watch* TWO MINUTES! Andrew: Ok, Im on. What are the answers!? Eric: Here, just give me your computer (computers are swapped) Eric (mumbling to himself): g . . . sub . . . 1 . . . times . . . . AAAH! Stupid fraction! Work! Ok, got it, True True False, A, A, D, False . . . Andrew: ONE MINUTE! Eric: Alright, Ive almost got it, I just finished the second assignment. CRAP! Theres no way I can finish this last one! Andrew: Hit submit then! Eric: SUBMITTED! Wait, NO! Empty parts, I cant submit it! Andrew: 15 SECONDS! GO! Eric: Show answer, show answer, show answer, SUBMIT! At the end of the day, even if you successfully completed Mastering Physics, there is no feeling of pride or mastery and you detest the website just as much as you did earlier. Sometimes you will hear students trying justify their completion of Mastering Physics by saying things like Ive Mastered Physics already, have you even started? but most everybody knows that there is no real feeling of accomplishment involved in finishing Mastering Physics, just this sense of uncleanliness after having spent an hour of your life doing online physics. As people grow older, they often experience problems with their health. Their bodies grow more fragile and susceptible to diseases. Many people 50 years of age and older are reporting health problems that were not experienced by people in their same age group long ago. This problem is created by rising health care costs. As the Boomer generation begins to require more medical care, the cost of that medical care continues to increase. Health issues and their ability to cope with them and find the proper medical support is a major concern for Baby Boomers. Along with rising health care costs, Baby Boomers also worry about money and retirement. During the last couple years of their careers before retiring, people usually enjoy salaries and bonuses that are larger than at any other point in their career. As a result, money is rarely a major concern. However, many people fail to save that money. Instead, they spend it on vacations, their families and in the pursuit of living fun lives. This can lead to a rude awakening when they retire. Because they have not saved much money during their career, a lot of people discover that they do not have enough money to live comfortably during their retirement years. When they retire, they no longer earn a salary. They no longer receive bonus checks. Instead, they are forced to live off the income that can be generated by the investments they have made throughout their lives. Unfortunately, many have not invested any money that can generate this income. Other Baby Boomer issues complicate this money problem. People live longer lives today. When a Baby Boomer retires, he can expect to live many years in retirement. In the past, a 65-year old man could expect to live 10 years in retirement before passing away. The financial requirements of living comfortably for these 10 years were manageable. Today, people use a life expectancy of 90 to 95 years. That is, when a person retires at 65 years of age, he can expect to live up to 30 years in retirement. With dwindling health, rising health care costs and a lack of savings to generate income, the financial requirements of living 30 years in retirement are out of reach for many people. These health, money and retirement concerns will grow as more of the Baby Boomer generation moves into retirement. Some will choose to work part-time jobs to keep active, stay healthy and generate supplemental income. Others will require the aid of family and friends. The Mosque Essays The Mosque Essay The Mosque Essay The mosque is the Muslim place of worship, which in Arabic is refered to as the Masjid this means place of prostration because Muslims bow low to God when praying. Mosques can be set up anywhere you place a prayer mat and kneel down to prostrate yourself and pray to Allah. It does not necessarily need to be a building but it is necessary to go to a mosque during festival times as it helps the Muslim community to join together and become closer. Another distinctive feature of a mosque is the Islamic symbol of the moon and star. This represents how the light of the moon and stars guide men through the desert, which links in with the idea that, the moon and stars guide Muslims through life. Male Muslims will prayer five times a day in the mosque, female Muslims do not need to attend the mosque to prayer as much as it is seen as their duty to hold and keep the house together so they often pray at home. The Friday prayer in the mosque, called the jumah is the most important. ALL MALE Muslims in the area will try and join together for that prayer. It shows Muslims uniting themselves throughout the world. Most mosques have one or more slender towers called minarets. In Arab villages, a man would stand on the balcony at the top facing Mecca and call to the other Muslims to prayer. He is called a Muezzin but nowadays in Arab villages, a recording or a loudspeaker will be used instead. Most mosques have a dome on the outside which is important in hotter countries because it allows the air to flow around the building more easily. But its main purpose in this country is to make the voice louder when someone is speaking and it also becomes a distinctive feature of the mosque. To Muslims the shape of the dome represents God and the eternity of life. It also shows the significance of Allah compared to the size of us as it represents Allah creator of the universe looking down on us. In the mosque that we visited there was no dome or minaret because it was a converted hotel this also means that the call to prayer (adhan) was made within the mosque and was loud enough to be heard no matter where you were in the mosque. Every Mosque must have somewhere for Muslims to wash themselves before going to pray. Big mosques perhaps in other countries may have a large open-air pool or water fountain. But in this country and in the smaller mosques there tends to be small bathroom facilities and sometimes there is a cloakroom. Muslims must always have somewhere to put their shoes because they have to take them off before entering the mosque to stop dirt and dust entering the holy building. On our visit to Bournemouth mosque we noticed that there was a small room to put your shoes and coat pegs to put any belongings on before entering the mosque. In the mosque there were two separate wudu areas, one for the woman and one for the men. Each Muslim must perform the ritual washings before praying so that they are clean when they are praying to Allah. The significance of them being clean on the outside symbolises them being clean on the inside as they have the right intent or niyyah to pray to Allah Below are some of the ritual washings all Muslims must perform: Inside the mosque it is very bare, there are no seats (except for medical reasons when the person will sit on a small stool and perform the prayer movements mentally rather than physically) and people either pray on their own mats or on the carpet provided. It does not necessarily matter if all the prayer movements are perfect because it is the intention (niyyah) to prayer that counts. Muslims will devote their time and focus completely on Allah, which is the intention of prayer. Muslims have nothing to distract them from their prayer but at Bournemouth Mosque there were two Medallions which helped Muslims to focus on their prayer. The medallions remind them that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad is the Prophet of Allah . The expectations of employees in their movement from one organization to another have also increased hence necessitating more and more organizational changes so as to meet the current market demand. American international group is a constantly changing organization due to the changing customer demands among other factors. According to AIG Group Management Division (2009), the rate of change portrayed a good culture of AIG that does not show resistance to change in the organization. Although the company experienced some hard times in 2005, its culture of good change enabled it to come out of the crisis. Organizational change has seen the abolition of some of the international market barriers which has then helped many organizations like AIG to venture into partnership with foreign institutions thus improving its market and services. This therefore illustrates the importance of constant organizational change. In spite the importance or organizational change not all the undertaken changes that deliver the expected benefits to the organization. This is the reason why any change in an organization should be carried out through the right procedures. Strong leadership qualities for the managers are also necessary for successful organizational change (Harigopal 2006). Failure for organizational change to deliver is usually brought by reasons such as absence of a change agent with qualifications or the change agent being too junior in an institution. Lack of support by the senior management and their committed executive should be available in any organization. Poor definition of organization objectives and diverse dimensional solutions helps in building confidence in the involved participants hence enabling them to take part in every process of the change. Failed organizational change initiatives do a lot of harm to the employees both in their spirit and strength which creates more difficulty in the accomplishment of the consecutive change initiatives. Actually todays managers face a great challenge in managing change. In order to ensure success therefore all managers are required to understand their organization together with their real needs. According to Harigopal (2006), the change leaders should also understand that bringing positive change in any organization is primarily about changing the employees behaviour in certain ways. Leadership, and powerful management skills like visioning, planning, prioritizing, giving feedback and rewarding are key issues in the success of any organization.
